Pat Cole’s Life with Horses
By J Hart
Very few people ever get to live their dream… even for one day. Pat has lived hers for well over fifty years riding ,breeding, raising, showing and racing quarter horses.
Pat a 6th generation Texan has been passionate about horses since she could walk. Growing up in a small central Texas town, her grandfather gave her a horse when she was six years old. From that moment of excitement when she mistakenly kissed old Brownie and patted her grandfather, she has been “horse crazy.”
At the age of 20 yrs. old, she married and moved onto a 10,000 acre ranch in the Hill Country of Texas, where she and her husband ran 350/400 head of cattle, 10,000 head of Angora goats, 300 +/- head of sheep and 25/30 head of horses. During that time, Pat was a full time wife, mother and ranch hand.
Fast forward to when Pat and her husband moved back to Houston, Texas, and opened a large western store, Salt Grass Saddlery and for the next 10 years or so, she helped the business grow to one of 10 largest in the nation. During this same period she was an active 4-H Horse Club Leader and is a Life Member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo which sponsors one of the biggest youth horse shows today.
Next came training and showing horses in pursuit of a National Championship. Pat and her horses competed in well over 750 events all around the US winning many awards with 4 different horses obtaining the lofty Quarter Horse Champion status. Only 3 other women outranked her in the championships won category during the same time period.
Pat and her husband’s love of horses shifted to breeding, raising and racing Thoroughbred and Quarter Horses. Over the next 25 years, they raised 98 foals and sent almost half of those to the track going to the winner’s circle many times
A few years later, Virgil Vengeful by Staunch Avenger (Thoroughbred), was foaled on the Cole’s farm. As a 2 year old, Virgil won 5 out of 6 races, running 3/100’s of a second off the track record in his first race. A few weeks later that year he ran 3rd in a stakes race and then later that year won the 1st Consolation of the All American Futurity in Ruidoso, New Mexico.
Pat readily acknowledges all of the many people who have helped her over many years from her husband to many legends in the horse world.
Clearly Pat knows horses and would like to share that knowledge and her love for these beautiful animals.
