Kentucky Derby contender Hansen back
at Turfway, will school in the paddock friday

Eclipse champion and Kentucky Derby contender Hansen will school in the paddock at Turfway Park on Friday evening between the sixth and seventh races, according to the colt’s breeder and majority owner, Kendall Hansen, M.D.

Hansen is expected to be in the paddock around 8:00 p.m.

He also is expected to stretch his legs on the track during training hours on Friday morning, likely about 6:00 a.m., said trainer Mike Maker.

Hansen will remain at Turfway through Friday before heading to Louisville to continue his training, Maker said.  Hansen returned to Kentucky from New York on Monday after winning the Gotham Stakes (G3) last Saturday at Aqueduct.

For his trip to the Gotham Stakes winner’s circle, Dr. Hansen decided against the usual coat-and-tie in favor of a bright blue t-shirt emblazoned with the phrase The Great White Hope 05.05.12, in reference to the color of Hansen and the date of this year’s Kentucky Derby.  The shirts, produced by Overlay Apparel, will be available at Turfway on Friday for $20 each.  Dr. Hansen, a Northern Kentucky pain management specialist, has announced he will donate his portion of the proceeds to New Vocations, a racehorse retraining and adoption organization.

Hansen started his career with two races at Turfway, breaking his maiden on Sept. 9 and next winning the Bluegrass Cat Kentucky Cup Juvenile on Sept. 24.  In his third start, Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs, he held off Union Rags to win the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) by a head, sealing his selection as the year’s champion 2-year-old male. In the first start of his 3-year-old campaign he finished second to Algorithms in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream on Jan. 29, his lone defeat.  His winning effort in the Gotham Stakes was his second start this year.  Hansen is expected to make his next start in the Wood Memorial (G1) at Aqueduct on April 7.
